The history of Menshen is a very old deity that dates back to as early as Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD) where people made wood carvings of characters to ward off evil spirits. This tradition continued onto the Tang (618-906), Five (907-960), and Song (960-1279) Dynasties where great generals were physically assigned at the doors of the imperial palace to protect the officials inside. Along with the invention and development of paper, the generals themselves were associated with the ancient guardians and soon evolved and replaced by painting the portraits on paper and hung by the doors. They would be positioned facing towards each other on each side of entrances to doors, gates, or passages. Symbolically, the axe holding guardian repels and fights off outside demons while the mace holding guardian protects the household that are inside.
This particular pair of Menshen originated from the Yongzhen period in the Qing Dynasty (1723-1735); hand carved in solid Elmwood and finished in gold leaf. Each piece weighs approximately 350 lbs and is an exquisite item as paintings of Menshen was readily more available than a wooden hand carved ones.
